Wattage is the entire heat spec. What you are actually choosing between is how that identical heat gets moved around the room, and how likely the thing is to kill you.

Is an expensive 1500-watt space heater warmer than a cheap one?
No. A 1500-watt electric heater converts essentially all of that electricity into heat, so every one of them puts out about 5,100 BTU per hour regardless of brand, price, or the word on the front. What differs is how the heat is distributed, how accurate the thermostat is, and how safe the unit is — and safety is not a small point, because space heaters cause a wildly disproportionate share of fatal house fires. Buy on distribution, thermostat and safety certification. There is no such thing as a warmer 1500-watt heater.

Electric resistance heating converts nearly 100% of the electricity drawn into heat, because there is nowhere else for the energy to go. One watt is 3.412 BTU per hour, so 1500 watts is roughly 5,118 BTU per hour in every unit ever sold. A heater cannot beat this and marketing cannot change it.123

Where the marketing hides
Because output is fixed, brands compete on claims that sound thermal but are not: heating technology names, coverage area, and the word efficient. Building-science writers have spent years pointing out that 100% site efficiency is the floor for this entire product class, not an achievement — a heat pump moving heat rather than making it beats it outright.23

What genuinely differs between units
Distribution and control. A fan-forced ceramic unit pushes warm air across a room quickly; a convection heater using a heat-transfer liquid such as oil stores heat, cycles less often and holds a steadier temperature. Neither makes more heat than the other — the total is fixed at the wattage — but they feel completely different in a room, and that is the actual choice you are making.12

The part nobody puts on the box
Space heaters and heating stoves account for roughly 30% of home heating equipment fires but around 73% of the deaths and 70% of the injuries from them. That is the single most decision-relevant number in this category, and it is the one no product page mentions.45

Your circuit is closer to the limit than you think
1500 watts at 120 volts draws about 12.5 amps. The National Electrical Code caps continuous load at 80% of a circuit rating, which is 12 amps on a 15-amp circuit — so a 1500-watt heater running continuously is already over that line before anything else on the breaker. Federal fire-safety guidance is to plug a heater directly into a wall outlet and keep clearance around it.678

Running cost is not a brand feature either
Every 1500-watt heater on high costs the same per hour to run, because they all draw 1.5 kilowatt-hours per hour. Electric resistance heat is also typically the most expensive way to buy a unit of heat once generation losses are counted, which is why using space heaters to warm a whole house tends to be a mistake regardless of which ones you buy.23

Knowing what else is on the circuit is the difference between a warm room and a tripped breaker or a hot outlet. A 1500-watt heater is already over the code's continuous-load allowance for a 15-amp circuit before you plug in anything else.

What should you skip?
Skip anything selling wattage-per-dollar or a proprietary heating technology as a warmth advantage, because that advantage cannot exist. Skip the whole category if what you actually want is to heat a house — a 1500-watt heater is a fifth of a small furnace and electric resistance heat is usually the most expensive way to buy a BTU, so you will get a large bill and a still-cold house. Skip any unit without a tip-over switch, an overheat cutoff and a recognised safety certification, no matter how cheap it is. And skip running one unattended overnight or through a power strip: this is the product class responsible for most heating-fire deaths in the country, and nearly all of that is preventable with placement, clearance and a direct outlet.
Questions people actually ask
Is a 1500-watt heater with better technology cheaper to run?
No. Running cost is set by the wattage you draw and the time you draw it, so two 1500-watt heaters on high cost exactly the same per hour. The only real savings come from a thermostat or eco mode that lets the unit spend more time switched off, or from heating a smaller space.
Why do some heaters claim 5,000 BTU and others 5,200?
Rounding. 1500 watts is 5,118 BTU per hour, and manufacturers round in whichever direction flatters the box. Anything advertising meaningfully more than about 5,100 BTU from a standard 120-volt plug is either a different voltage, a gas appliance, or wrong.
Can I put a 1500-watt heater on a 15-amp circuit?
It will usually run, but it is over the code's 80% continuous-load allowance for that circuit, which is 12 amps. That leaves no headroom for anything else on the same breaker. A dedicated 20-amp circuit is the correct home for one, and a wall outlet with nothing in between is the minimum.
Are oil-filled radiators more efficient than fan heaters?
Not in the energy sense — both convert the same electricity into the same heat. They feel more efficient because the stored heat smooths out temperature swings, so the thermostat cycles less and the room stops going hot-then-cold. That is a comfort win, not an energy one.
What actually heats a room for less money?
A heat pump, including a cheap window or portable unit with a heating mode. It moves existing heat instead of creating it, so it can deliver several units of heat per unit of electricity, which is the one thing a resistance heater is physically incapable of doing.
